In Memory of an Aggie...
Mr. Curtis Hilbert Figures, Jr.
was born on January 30, 1950 in the state of North
Carolina. Mr. Figures served his country as a member of the
United States Army. He was stationed in Germany from 1971
to 1977, where he served as an Equal Opportunity Review
Officer. Curtis graduated from North Carolina Agricultural
and Technical State University in 1980.
Curtis Figures
migrated to California in 1981 where he became a faithful
member of St. Luke Bible Fellowship in San Dimas,
California. He loved to teach bible study and read the
scriptures of the Holy Bible. He was also involved with and
a member of several business and community organizations,
which include the Boys and Girls Club of Pomona, Youth
Education Motivation Program (YEMP), Neighbor Helping
Neighbor, Los Angeles Urban League – Pomona, North Carolina
A&T State University Alumni Association, Inc. – Greater Los
Angeles Chapter, and served as President of the Pomona
Inland Valley Micro Enterprise Loan Fund. Mr. Figures owned
One Source Bottling Company in Pomona, California; was an
entrepreneur at heart and affectionately referred to as “the
water man.”
Despite Mr. Curtis
Figures having received a liver transplant in 2004 and
diagnosis with lung cancer in 2005, he was a loving and
giving person who always had a positive attitude towards
life. Curtis never complained if asked how he was doing. He
would often reply, "I'm doing great!" He passed away on
September 21, 2005.
As an NC A&T SU alumnus, Mr.
Figures personified spiritual, professional, and
entrepreneurial character.
He is remembered for
his love for God and his fellow man, selflessly giving his
time to the community, actively supporting the chapter’s
efforts with donations, and exhibiting the drive to run his
own business.
On November 20, 2005, the
members of the North Carolina A&T State University Alumni
Association, Inc. – Greater Los Angeles Chapter voted to
announce the first chapter scholarship in remembrance of
the late Mr. Curtis Hilbert
Figures, Jr.
The Curtis Figures
Memorial Scholarship will be given to the student that
displays extraordinary service to the Los Angeles community
and has been accepted and will attend his alma mater - North
Carolina A&T State University.
Criteria for Consideration
To be
considered for the Alumni Scholarship, at least one relative
must be an active
member of the North Carolina A&T State University
Alumni Association, Incorporated – Greater Los Angeles
Chapter. If you reside in the Greater Los Angeles area and

Students must:

Reside within a hundred mile radius of the
city of Los Angeles.

Provide proof of admittance to NC A&T SU
as an entering freshman or transfer student.

Complete the attached scholarship
application.

Complete an essay entitled ‘How will Aggie
Pride influence my future?’

The essay should not to exceed five
hundred (500) words
-
The essay should be typed and
double-spaced, with 12-point Times New Roman font.

Submit two (2) letters of recommendation:
one from a community leader (organizational chair,
minister, etc.) and one from a school faculty member
(teacher, guidance counselor, coach, etc.) on official
letterhead.
