Letter from the President

The Western Regional Conference was held Saturday, August 13, 2003 in conjunction with the Las Vegas Football Classic. Although we were not victorious on the football field, many of us were informed that A&T is on the move in positive direction. We heard from several speakers throughout the day. Highlights from their speeches are listed below.

Harriet Davis – Director, Alumni Affairs

  • A&T graduated 1050 graduates in May 2003
  • 5 Aggies received awards from the National Assoc. for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education
  • Elvin Bethea (c/o ’68) was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame

 

Teresa Davis – President, National Alumni Association

  • Theme for 2003 – 2005

CHANGE – INCLUSION – DIRECTION

  • Strategic Plan – Follow the Long Range Plan, for lasting partnership with affinity groups.
  • Operational Plan – Reorganize the executive structure of the assoc. from committee structure to a board structure.
  • Organizational Plan – Bridge to generational gap between ALL Aggies through leadership development and community involvement.
  • Financial Plan – Encourage giving. GIVE BACK!
  • Planning a nation-wide Aggie Volunteer Day for all Alumni.
  • Focusing on communication and leadership transitioning.

 

James Renick  – Chancellor, NCA&TSU

  • Largest enrollment in A&T history 2,300 freshman, 10, 044 students total.
  • Academic retention is up.
  • A&T is undergoing a complete technical “overhaul”. Putting the “T” back in A&T.
  • Extensive facility upgrades will continue with the demolition of Scott Hall and the addition of more dormitories in the fall 2004.
  • Bricks from the Scott Hall structure will be sold by the university. A memorial commemorating the National Guard incident  at Scott Hall will also be constructed.
  • Athletics – A&T is focusing on enhancing the institution, reinvesting in sports programs and putting academics first.
  • New 8 lane Olympic track is in construction.
  • New Aggie Dog and A&T logos will be unveiled at the first A&T home football game in October.
  • Richard Hunt has been commissioned to create a sculpture for the center of campus.

 

David Hoard – Vice Chan. of Development, NCA&TSU

  • Focused on increasing giving.
  • May explore workshops and other avenues to strengthen giving from younger Aggies.
  • Scholarship money is needed to make A&T even more competitive.
  • Giving is continuing to rise at A&T despite the challenging economy.

 

Once again, thank you to everyone who traveled to Las Vegas in support of A&T. Aggie Pride!

Congratulations are in order for Ms. Rasheda Kilpatrick. Rasheda recently completed UCLA Law and is now studying for the bar. Way to go Rasheda!

 

We wish a speedy recovery to Mr. Brian Pearson. Get well soon.

 

Let’s receive Mr. Abner Ward and Mr. Laurie Scott into to the LA alumni family. Also welcome back to Ms. Greta Shaw. We look forward to seeing you all at our next meeting Oct. 19 at The Getty Museum.

 

NCA&TSU has selected east coast and west coast representatives to co-chair the Campaign for North Carolina A&T. Mr. Willie Deese and Ms. Janice Bryant-Howroyd spearhead the efforts to help A&T raise $100 million.
